BACKGROUND

Somali Women Development Centre is a non-governmental and non-profit making organization that was established mid-2000. SWDC is working to improve the situation of women in Somalia. SWDC’s guiding vision is the belief that, with support, women can become empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

Somali Women Development Centre strives to minimize the number of women who are subjected to violence by empowering them through access to knowledge and greater economic independence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The lawyer will Visit the prisons in Mogadishu once a week minimum 3 hours per week to provide legal advice and undertake cases by:
  • Screen the remand caseload to make sure that people are remanded lawfully, their cases are being expedited and they are held appropriately as per the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Code, Prison Law 1971 and pertinent international human rights standards Monitor the cases that are not in line with the domestic law and procedure and duly report.
  • Conduct periodic census to determine who is in prison, duration, why, age and gender.
  • Provide legal information to prisoners to allow them to understand the law, process and apply this learning in their own cases.
  • Give special attention to vulnerable groups, such as IDPs, women, juvenile offenders, the aged, etc.
  • Require the prison staff to co-operate with legal aid service providers and advertise these services and how to access them in each prison.
  • Take on criminal and civil cases and provide legal representation
  • The lawyer will Visit the main police stations at least twice a week for at least two hours per week.
  • The Lawyers and Paralegals will conduct four workshops on legal aid and cases to justice for community leaders and IDPs representation, judiciary and police with particular focus on legal information that would help to understanding legal steps and rights to seek legal redress through the justice system.
  • The Lawyers and Paralegals must undertake a minimum of 2 visits per week to IDPs camps in their respective locations.
  • The Lawyers and their paralegals shall meet at least once a week to review activities and identified cases. The paralegals shall submit weekly paralegal activity reports to the lawyers and then to the Project Coordinator.
  • The lawyers provide monthly reports on cases undertaken by paralegals in each site and compelling report to the Project Coordinators.
  • The lawyers shall provide free legal aid at least 120 criminal, civil and family cases in every month.
  • The lawyer shall Supervise, monitor, recording and report Human rights violations occurring in prison and police custody or committed by the law enforcement authorities.
  • The Lawyer shall ensure that the principle of confidentiality of all Human rights reporting received by him/her, during the project period will be respected and no public reference will be made to the source of information.
  • The Lawyer shall ensure to provide sustainable legal services to vulnerable groups, in Particular women, children, survivors of GBV, IDPs, and refugees, the elderly and minorities.

Requirement

  • The suitable candidate must have at least three years’ experience in law with license certificate approved from Supreme court of Somalia
  • Experience in Somali Laws specially ( Somali Penal Code and its Procedures, Somali Civil law and its procedure) and Other related laws of the country
  • Experience in defending cases of all district levels in Somalia (Court District, Military, Regional, Appeal and Supreme courts)
  • Experience in Human Right (Women and children’s Rights)
  • Knowledge of Somali Police Force and custodial corps

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least a university degree in law or Sharia and Law, or equivalent
  • Fluency in English and Somali
  • Good communication skills
  • Good command of Ms Office
